Come coltivare la bellezza dentro e fuori da noi?
A questo tema secoli fa i greci dedicarono un’espressione che da allora ha ispirato e guidato un gran numero tra uomini e donne: kalos kai agathos.

Kalos potrebbe essere tradotto con bello e Agathos con buono. Kalos kai agathos starebbe dunque per bello e buono.
Tuttavia, questa traduzione non rende! Nelle parole bello e buono infatti c’è tutto, ma al tempo stesso manca ancora qualcosa.
la Grecia classica, con tutta la sua mortalità e immortalità, universalità e località.

Essere kalos kai agathos significa essere di una bellezza umana, razionale e finita, e al tempo stesso di una bontà divina, folle e infinita. E soprattutto essere belli e buoni al tempo stesso!

Lo suggeriscono le parole stesse: la k di kalos, esteriore e ordinata; la g di agathos, interiore e passionale.

Coltivare la bellezza interiore ed esteriore come ambivalenza

Chi coltiva la bellezza secondo il principio kalos kai agathos si pone in una condizione di ambivalenza costante. Vive tra controllo e perdita di controllo, tra ordine e caos, tra comprendere e contemplare, tra fare e cercare, tra pensiero e passione.

Il controllo e il rigore che alimentano la bellezza. La perdita di controllo e la dedizione che alimentano la bontà.

Chi persegue questa via si alza al mattino di buon ora e si domanda “Cosa dà valore alla mia vita?”. Prende un foglio di carta e scrive, non quello che pensa, ma quello che sente.

Poi si domanda “Di cosa il mio corpo ha bisogno per vivere al meglio?”.  A quel punto osserva e pensa e, se serve, studia.
Quindi beve un bel bicchiere d’acqua, magari due, perché sa che siamo fatti per il 70% di acqua. Mette il corpo in movimento, affinché questo respiri aria. Mangia un po’ di tutto, dal momento che sa che il suo corpo è fatto un po’ di tutto (ho parlato della colazione come atto coraggioso qualche giorno fa).

Il contatto con il nostro tormento interiore alimenta la bontà d’animo.
La cura del nostro involucro esteriore crea la bellezza.

Kalos kai aghatos: attraverso le epoche

L’espressione kalos kai agathos si ritrova in diverse epoche della storia greca. Con essa furono descritti gli eroi dell’epoca omerica e al tempo stesso i grandi uomini politici dell’epoca delle città stato (Atene, Sparta).

Come si spiega che gli uni e gli altri fossero kalos kai agathos? Se kalos kai agathos è un guerriero vigoroso che ha cosparso di sangue il campo di battaglia, come può esserlo anche un politico esile che si impegna tutti i giorni per evitare il conflitto tra i cittadini e per alimentare la democrazia?

C’è una sola spiegazione: kalos kai agathos significa essere al tempo stesso di una bellezza divina e di una bontà mortale, in armonia con l’eternità e in sintonia con il momento presente. Parafrasando umilmente Immanuel Kant, belli in quanto in armonia con il cielo stellato sopra di noi e buoni in quanto in armonia con la legge morale dentro di noi.

Immortali e mortali.

Il guerriero combatte per la giusta causa e il politico prende le parti della giustizia: così entrambi sono buoni. Il guerriero e il politico, tengono entrambi la testa alta, lo sguardo rivolto all’orrizzonte, il petto aperto e la pancia leggermente retratta, quando si gettano l’uno nel campo di battaglia e l’altro nell’agora (la piazza dove si animava il dibattito tra i cittadini). Così entrambi sono belli.

Bontà e Bellezza: non si contraddicono pur contraddicendosi

I concetti di bellezza e bontà, non si contraddicano in teoria, tuttavia bisticciano spesso nella pratica! Ed è questo che rende la via del kalos kai agathos non priva di difficoltà.

Coltivare la bellezza richiede una quotidiana cura di sé, del proprio corpo, della propria mente. Al tempo stesso alimentare la bontà significa impegnarsi altrettanto quotidianamente nella cura degli altri e del mondo.

Quando si è giovani e ci si può ancora concedere di vivere la vita un pezzo alla volta, la soluzione sembra semplice: trovare un tempo per sé, in cui coltivare la bellezza, e un tempo per gli altri, in cui coltivare la bontà.

Con il passare del tempo, tuttavia, la vita si fa complessa e non è più così generosa. Da adulti lo sappiamo bene. Le giornate diventano un ring in cui ci sembra spesso di dover scegliere tra noi e gli altri, tra bellezza e bontà. Tuttavia, se scegliamo e scomponiamo la vita in noi e gli altri, stiamo rompendo il binomio kalos kai agathos, ci stiamo arrendendo.

Coltivare la bellezza interiore ed esteriore non significa crearsi due vite in cui essere nell’una belli e nell’altra buoni. Significa coltivare una sola vita in cui bellezza e bontà si alimentino l’un l’altra. Perché nessuno è bello come chi è profondamente buono e nessuno è buono come chi è veramente bello.

Coltivare la bellezza interiore ed esteriore non significa distinguere, ma confondere.

La via del kalos kai agathos è la terza via, in cui l’armonia con il cielo stellato sopra di me, non contraddice quella con la legge morale dentro di me.
